Professor
Environmental Engineering

M. Sc. 1974 at Technical University of Denmark (solid waste), Ph.D. in 1980 at University of Washington, Seattle, USA (water chemistry), Dr.Agro. at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, Denmark (soil chemistry). Full Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark since 1990. Visiting Professor at University of Washington, Seattle, USA 1998-1999.

Thomas H. Christensen (THC) and his research group have worked on waste characterization, waste treatment, landfilling, reuse on land, environmental effects and environmental assessment of solid waste. Recent research interests include: source separated organic waste, biogasification of organic waste, fate of elements in waste incineration, chemical treatment of incineration residues, reuse of bottom ash in construction, groundwater pollution at landfills, life-cycle-assessment of solid waste management systems and integrated solid waste management concepts. THC has published more than 130 international scientific journal articles, edited 5 books on solid waste and presented more than 200 conference contributions.

THC´s teaching is focussed on Solid Waste Technology and Management at DTU, Denmark, which is part of a 2 year international master programme in environmental science and engineering. THC has advised more 100 M. Sc and 20 Ph.d. students.

External professional activities.

THC was one of the founders of the journal Waste Management & Research and was one of the Managing Editors from 1982 – 1990; currently he is engaged with Waste Management and Journal Of Contaminant Hydrology. THC was co-founder of the Danish Waste Management Association DAKOFA. THC has been engaged with numerous conference committees and is the co-organizer of the Sardinia Symposium on solid waste management and landfilling. THC has been engaged in research programme evaluations in several countries. THC has served as referee for more than 25 international scientific journals. THC has been a consultant to industry, municipalities, utility companies, agencies and the EU.
